A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin - Book 1 Summary

Image
A Song of Ice and Fire is a high fantasy story written for adults. April 17th, HBO will be launching a TV show based on the series, book 1 - A Game of Thrones - to be more specific. In light of this I thought a book review might be in order. If you are interested in the TV show, you can find out more about it by clicking on the link lower in the article. This summary does not give the book any justice, but it is meant as a reminder for anyone who has read the book and forgot, so they might prepare for the TV show. Prologue The story begins with a prologue, set in a moonlit but cold forest. Three men, brothers of the Night's watch have found a camp of wildlings, seemingly dead. When they look closer, the wildlings are gone, soon to be replaced by unnatural creatures, who soon kill two of the three men. Chapter 1 - Bran The book portrays the story in a point-of-view fashion. The title of a chapter means we see the chapter's story as the character in the title sees...

Game of Thrones Leaves Me Wanting More

Image
I picked up a copy of the Game of Thrones book, fully prepared to face the notorious sex, violence, and immoral acts it was purported to have. Thus, I thought nothing of the cheating wife, the incest, or of the kid being thrown off a tower. I have read far worse in contemporary and historical fiction. Yet when I reached the inevitable death of an innocent, golden-eyed wolf pup at the reluctant hands of its master's father, I felt a tugging of heartstrings. It was then that I realized that George R.R. Martin can spin a good yarn - one that entangles you in its fine threads before you realize what's happening. If you are expecting a hardcore fantasy epic, you will find the Game of Thrones book sadly lacking. There is nothing Westeros and its Seven Kingdoms have to offer that you cannot find in any other medieval setting, save for seasons that last years and the mysterious beings called the 'Others' lurking beneath the great Wall in the north. Instead, Martin offer...

A Song of Ice and Fire - Game of Thrones - Conspiracy Theories

Image
A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin has gained lots of fans from the time the first book in the series, A Game of Thrones, has been published in 1998. In the last two years, after the Game of Thrones series was released, that fan base grew even larger. Even though there are many fans of the series who won't be bothered by reading the books, there are plenty of those who wanted to see more details and learn more about the world of Westeros, and it's aristocracy - House Lannister, House Stark, House Targaryen, and others, and those indulged in the books. A Song of Ice and Fire is far from over Unfortunately, only five of the planned seven have been published so far. George R. R. Martin is known for not being a book worm who has no life outside his writing, so many fans sometimes feel outraged when he chooses to visit a comicon rather than sit in his room and write the books all day long. It took 6 years between the publishing of A Feast for Crows and A Dance wi...

Game of Thrones Sets a New Standard for Epic Fantasy

Image
There is no denying that award-winning author George R. R. Martin can weave a fine tale, what with the long string of novels, short stories, and television adaptations credited to his name. With a Game of Thrones book, however, he broke through the barriers of the fantasy genre, bringing to light a unique story-telling structure that is sure to set a new benchmark for future generations of fantasy writers. Perhaps the most interesting facet of the Game of Thrones book is how Martin manages to create a world that is fantastical and realistic at the same time. While the setting has hints of magic, dragons, and otherworldly creatures, these are used more to enrich the world and the characters rather than to serve as the driving forces of the story. There is no "deus ex machina" element that is typical of fantasy worlds; no presence of an all-powerful god, wizard, or creature that will save the main hero from impending doom. Instead, all of the main characters have to get...

Game of Thrones Season 4 Sneak Peak

Image
Valar Morghulis, all men must die. In this season it holds true. Season 4 is preparing to have a steady stream of OMG moments throughout with lots of twists, action, intrigue, suspense, and breath taking scenery that Game of Thrones has come to be known for. In the Game of Thrones, no one is safe. We learned that when Ned Stark, a great and well loved character, lost everything from the neck up at the end of the first season. Tyrion, played by Peter Dinklage, faces great danger this year trying to keep his own head firmly attached to his shoulders. The only person that seems to be there for him is his brother Jamie. No doubt though our imp will manage to make it through splendidly. The Stark family, broken, and scattered across the world are strong and are enduring. Arya, our once sweet tomboy, is now a full man killer. Sansa is no longer that young naive girl, ignorant to the true ways of the world. She will be facing new challenges and decisions that will take her life into...

HBO's Game of Thrones - As Good As The Book?

Image
Game of Thrones  is the title of the first book in a yet to be finished fantasy series by George R.R. Martin, entitled  A Song Of Fire And Ice .  Game Of Thrones  is also a recently released game on 360 and PS3, a board game, a card game, a tabletop role playing game, a graphic novel, the subject of several iOS and Google Play apps, and an upcoming Facebook game. It's also one of the hottest IP's around right now, thanks largely in part to the wildly popular HBO program currently airing its second season, as well as the DVD/Blu-ray release of the Emmy and Golden Globe winning first season, available now. I'll be honest. I'm a proponent of the tenet that the book is always better than the movie. Only in the cases where the book was written first, that is. If it says "The novelization based on the film" on the cover, then it's kindling. I'm snooty that way. Even when I know that the book is better, because it's always better, I'm still oc...

Games Of Thrones - Underestimated Masterpiece or Complete Flop?

Image
"Game of Thrones" is your classic tale of a TV series that was highly underestimated right from the beginning, by critics and avid television viewers alike. In fact, there were some that even waited until there were a lot of people talking about it to take time out of their days and watch it simply because they thought it was another case of "déjà vu" in the world of fantasy shows. Were the assumptions right or is the "Game of Thrones" a series on HBO that would soon set records, leaving other television shows trailing in the dust? "Game of Thrones" is an HBO production based off of a bestselling series of fantasy book s. While the books may have enjoyed massive popularity, fantasy has not been the most successful genre when it comes to television. A long history of airing mediocre fantasy shows to downright failures has perhaps unfairly earned fantasy shows a bad reputation with most viewers. Thankfully, the ...
